RED ALERT: HIV, AIDS infection on the rise in Enugu

Enugu state mapThe Civil Society for HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (CiSHAN) in Enugu State yesterday issued a red alert regarding the rising rate of Human Immuno-deficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) infections in the state.

The warning came on the heels of a similar concern raised by the State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who bemoaned high level of poverty in the country. However, Ugwuanyi did not link the two issues as being complementing each other.

CiSHAN, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) stated that more funds ought to be budgeted for HIV/AIDS-related cases to rid the state of the endemic.

Enugu State coordinator of the organisation, Mrs. B.C Nwibechukwu, who disclosed this when she paid a visit to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Edward Ubosi, lamented that infection occur among the low-risk heterosexual group, which includes people who are in marital or cohabiting relationship.
