Al-Qaida attack on Burkina Faso hotel leaves at least 20 dead, 33 rescued

Security forces have stormed a hotel in Burkina Faso's capital where Islamic militant fighters have been holding hostages.
Up to 20 people are reported to have been killed and 15 wounded in explosions and gunfire around the hotel in Ouagadougou, which witnesses reported was partly on fire.
Around 10 vehicles were on fire in the streets near the 146-room Splendid Hotel.
The Burkina Faso government said on Twitter that 33 people had been freed after commandos stormed the hotel, including minister Clement Sawadogo.
Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) claimed responsibility for the attack. Citing conversations with the attackers, the group claimed that 30 "crusaders" had been killed in "revenge for the Prophet", according to the US monitoring group SITE.
The militants took control of the five-storey Splendid hotel in Ouagadougou's business district, burning cars outside and firing in the air to drive back crowds before security forces arrived, prompting an intense exchange of gunfire.
One witness told Associated Press that he saw four men attack the hotel and neighbouring Cappuccino Cafe at about 7.30pm local time. Another witness said that when security forces arrived, they turned around rather than confront the attackers.
Both the hotel and the cafe are popular with United Nations staff and foreigners. It is located in a busy central area of the capital, not far from the airport.
Robert Sangare, director of Ouagadougou's university hospital centre, said: "We have received around 15 wounded people. There are people with bullet wounds and people who are injured because of falls." He said that the injured patients had told him they had seen around 20 bodies in the hotel.

A source in New York told the Mirror:
"There is no public or private service or a public memorial. There is nothing."Since the singer's death on Sunday music lovers have been speculating about what plans the legendary showman had for his funeral.
But unbeknown to his millions of fans around the world, his body was quietly cremated shortly after he died.

Turkey police HQ hit by bomb blast

The Turkey Police HeadQuarters in Cinar district, Diyarbakir province has been hit by a deadly bomb blast.

The bomb was detonated at the entrance of the police complex, officials say.

The blast also damaged nearby residential buildings.
The attackers then reportedly fired rockets at the headquarters.

Diyarbakir province has seen violent clashes between PKK separatists and the Turkish army in recent months.

Last year, the city of Diyarbakir and a number of other areas in the south-east were put under curfew as part of a security crackdown.

This followed a bomb blast that left 16 soldiers dead and a rebel ambush that killed 14 police officers - both incidents in the east.
A ceasefire between the army and the PKK collapsed in July, and Turkish jets have since bombed PKK bases in northern Iraq and the army launched a ground operation there.

Turkey is also part of a US-led coalition that has been carrying out air strikes against Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq and Syria.
However, Ankara has been accused of hitting mostly PKK targets, angering Kurds who are themselves fighting IS in the two countries.
Officials blamed the blast on Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK) militants, who are active in the mainly Kurdish province.
No group has so far said it carried out the attack.

FIFA General Secretary, Jerome Valcke, fired

FIFA's emergency committee decided to dismiss Jerome Valcke from the organisation after some ethics charges were brought against him over world cup ticket sales.

Press release below:

The FIFA emergency committee decided to dismiss Jerome Valcke from the position of FIFA secretary general with immediate effect. Jerome Valcke is therefore no longer the secretary general of FIFA.
''The employment relationship between FIFA and Jerome Valcke has also been terminated.
The duties of the secretary general will continue to be assumed by the acting secretary general, Dr Markus Kattner."

Valcke is facing a nine-year ban from FIFA after an ethics investigation into several alleged offences including being connected to black market sales of World Cup tickets.

FIFA's investigatory chamber finished its probe last week and has recommended a nine-year ban and a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs (£69,000) on charges including conflicts of interest and offering and accepting gifts and other benefits.

Valcke was suspended after allegations were made claiming he planned to benefit from black market World Cup ticket sales.

He has denied any wrongdoing, saying his conduct had always been "exemplary.
It is the second time Valcke has been sacked by FIFA - he was dismissed in December 2006 as marketing director after an American judge said he had lied repeatedly during FIFA's botched sponsorship negotiations with rival card giants MasterCard and Visa.

Less than eight months later, however, he was back in FIFA as second in command to president Sepp Blatter, who himself has been banned for eight years by the ethics committee"

Court denies FG power to seize MTN's funds in Nigerian banks

Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court in Lagos has denied the Federal Government powers to seize all funds owned by MTN Nigeria Communications Limited in Nigerian banks, pending when the telecommunication company pays up the N1.4 trillion fine leveled against it by the NCC over its failure to deactivate unregistered sim cards.

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), through his counsel, Dipo Okpeseyi (SAN), had in a motion filed before the court, expressed fears of MTN moving all its funds in Nigeria, since it was in their habit to do so.

According to the court paper, MTN had between October 2007 and May 2009 moved over $7.7bn of the money made in Nigeria to a foreign account. The telecommunications company had also on February 8, 2008, moved over $936m out of Nigerian banks to their foreign accounts.

"Unless this honourable court urgently entertains this application, the plaintiff/respondent would move its funds out of Nigeria, being the jurisdiction of this honourable court, and thereby frustrate the enforcement of the fine in the likely event that this honourable court sanctions the imposition of the fine," counsel to the AGF said.

However in his ruling, the presiding judge, Justice denied the Federal governments application, stating that it had not provided any evidence showing that MTN was indeed moving its funds out of Nigerian banks. He said hearing on the case filed against the Federal government challenging the N1.4 trillion fine is more important and of public interest and will need to be heard soon so judgement can be delivered.

He adjourned the case to January 22nd.

2 US Navy boats, crew held by Iran but will be returned - Pentagon

Iran has seized 10 U.S. Navy sailors (9 men, 1 woman) and their two small boats that drifted into Iranian waters with mechanical problems.

Iran accused the sailors of trespassing but American officials said Tehran has assured them that the crew and vessels would be returned safely and promptly.

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook told The Associated Press that the riverine boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when the U.S. lost contact with them.

U.S. officials said that the incident happened near Farsi Island in the middle of the Persian Gulf.

They said some type of mechanical trouble with one of the boats caused them to run aground and they were picked up by Iran.

The sailors were in Iranian custody on Farsi Island at least for some time, but it's not certain where they are now.
The semi-official Iranian news agency, FARS, said the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's navy has detained 10 foreign forces, believed to be Americans, and said the sailors were trespassing in Iranian waters. FARS also reported that one of the 10 sailors was a woman.
"We have been in contact with Iran and have received assurances that the crew and the vessels will be returned promptly," Cook said.
